Andang Kelana (b. 1983, Jakarta) is an artist, curator, art facilitator, graphic and website designer, freelance creative consultant, and lecturer. He currently serves as the Head of Centre at IDS | BTEC, Jakarta, after progressing from his previous position as Program Head of Digital Design & Illustrations.
In 2022, Andang took on the role of Chairman of the HEX Foundation (Hoppla Extended Asia Foundation), focusing on the development of internet technology-based art in Indonesia and Asia. This foundation serves as a platform for nurturing creative potential among the youth and new generations while fostering knowledge exchange in digital art. That same year, Andang was also commissioned for the Singapore Biennale with the project “Extended Asia: Discovery”, under the Extended.Asia initiative. This multimedia installation explored data circulation through information systems, promoting sustainable community ecosystems between Indonesia and Singapore. Andang’s longstanding commitment to innovative art practices is further evidenced by his earlier contributions as a co-founder of Forum Lenteng (2003) and his tenure as Artistic Board and Festival Manager for ARKIPEL – Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival until 2017.
In 2012, Forum Lenteng launched Visual Jalanan, an online platform dedicated to street art and DIY culture, where Andang acts as director. This platform evolved into a broader media project exploring urban visual culture. In 2015, he curated the “Visual Jalanan: Bebas Tapi Sopan (Free But Proper)” exhibition at the National Gallery of Indonesia, which was a parallel event to the Jakarta Biennale 2017. He also curated Abi Rama’s solo exhibition “Graphic Interchange” at Awanama Art Habitat in 2016. From 2017 to 2018, he was co-curator for the Pekan Seni Media (Media Art Week) in Pekanbaru, Riau, and Palu, Central Sulawesi, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia.
In late 2018, he participated as an artist in Indonesian Contemporary Art and Design (ICAD), with a research-based project on a street punk music group called Gamelanoink, titled “20 Years of Nothing.” In 2019, Andang initiated play.visualjalanan.org, a DIY sound lab platform, and in 2020, he launched www.extended.asia, an online terminal for visual and sound artists to collaborate on cross-genre audiovisual projects. And had an exhibition with extended.asia in Singapore Biennale 2022: Natasha titled Discovery. That same year, Andang co-founded hoppla.id with Mahardika Yudha, a fellow Forum Lenteng co-founder, creating an online platform for new media art exhibitions, discussions, and biennales.
Andang’s involvement in film and video began in 2003 with the Massroom Project, producing nine documentary videos about Jakarta. In 2005, he coordinated a documentary project in Mexico titled EL TVDCM (El Taller Video Documental de Ciudad de México), in collaboration with Forum Lenteng and El Despacho, Mexico. His photography exhibitions began in 2004, with a group show titled “Top Collection” at ruangrupa, Jakarta, followed by JEDA in 2006 at Galeri Cipta III-Taman Ismail Marzuki and Cemeti Art House, Yogyakarta.
His international presence includes participation in the ID-Contemporary Art Indonesia exhibition at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Berlin, in 2010. His film “Dongeng Rangkas (Rangkasbitung: A Piece of Tale)” was featured in several international festivals like DMZ Docs Korea and CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, and won Best Feature Film at the Yogyakarta Documentary Film Festival (2011). He also contributed to OK. Video “Flesh” – Jakarta International Video Festival at the National Gallery of Indonesia in 2011.
In 2015, together with Syaiful “Paul” Anwar, he co-directed the documentary film “Harimau Minahasa (Tiger of Minahasa)” for the Interseksi Foundation. He also participated in a residency program in South Korea under “Earth Calling – Thinking Otherwise” in 2012. Additionally, Andang served on the Program Board at Kineforum (2011-2012), directed the Jakarta 32°C Biennale (2012-2017), and was Program Manager at Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem (2016-2017).
Since 2019, Andang has also developed and managed Pejaten Huis, a cooperative profit space that integrates a coffee shop, streetwear store, motorcycle workshop, and gardening initiatives in Jakarta. In his free time, he continues to teach graphic and web design at the International Design School (now IDS | BTEC), Jakarta.
