(1983, Jakarta) Andang Kelana is an artist, curator, graphic & website designer, and freelance creative consultant. He is chairman of the HEX Foundation (Hoppla Extended Asia Foundation—The Hoppla Extended Asia Foundation is one way to see the potential of youth or new generations in developing internet technology-based art in Indonesia and Asia, as well as being a medium for distributing internet technology-based art knowledge. He is also a co-founder of Forum Lenteng – Jakarta (2003), the Artistic Board, and the Festival Manager for Arkipel – Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival. In 2012, Forum Lenteng initiated Visual Jalanan, a street art-focused online media that became a “DIY Culture Media,” he acted as director for the Visual Jalanan platform until now. In 2015, he curated a street art exhibition in Galeri Nasional Indonesia (National Gallery of Indonesia titled “Visual Jalanan: Bebas Tapi Sopan (Free But Proper)” as a parallel event to the Jakarta Biennale 2017. He also curated Abi Rama’s solo exhibition, Graphic Interchange, at Awanama Art Habitat – Jakarta a year earlier. 2017-2018 he was co-curator for Pekan Seni Media (Media Art Week) in Pekanbaru, Riau, and Palu, Central Sulawesi, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia. In late 2018, he participated as an artist in Indonesian Contemporary Art and Design 2018 (ICAD), with research from street punk music group—Gamelanoink, which was formed in the middle of 1998—titled “20 Years of Nothing“. In 2019, He initiated and developed play.visualjalanan.org—DIY Sound Lab Platform, and in 2020, www.extended.asia, an online terminal for visual and sound artists to extend collaborative cross-genre audio-visual media. In 2020, he started hoppla.id with Mahardika Yudha (fellow co-founder of Forum Lenteng), an online platform for internet and new media art for the online exhibition, discussion, and biennale. Also, in their free time, he teaches graphic and web design at International Design School (IDS), Jakarta. Since 2019 he developed and managed Pejaten Huis, a co-operate profit space in Jakarta: Coffee Shop, Street Wear Store, Motorcycle Workshop and Gardening, etc.
His experience in film and video began in 2003 by becoming a participant in the Massroom Project, which produced nine documentary videos about Jakarta. In 2005 he became a participant and coordinator in a documentary video project in Mexico in collaboration with Forum Lenteng and El Despacho, Mexico, under the title EL TVDCM (El Taller Video Documental de Ciudad de Mexico). He was also involved in photography exhibitions as an artist; in 2004, he took a photo exhibition with several Indonesian contemporary artists with the title “Top Collection” at ruangrupa. In 2006, he participated in JEDA-a photography exhibition at Galeri Cipta III-Taman Ismail Marzuki and Cemeti Art House, Yogyakarta.
In 2010, he was involved in the ID-Contemporary Art Indonesia exhibition at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien, Berlin-Germany. While with Forum Lenteng, his works have been presented in national and international film festival events. In 2011, his film “Dongeng Rangkas (Rangkasbitung: A Piece of Tale) ” this film participated in the 3rd DMZ – Docs Korean International Documentary Festival, CPH:DOX – Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, then won the Best Feature Film award at the Yogyakarta Documentary Film Festival 2011. I also participated in OK. Video “Flesh” 5th Jakarta – International Video Festival at National Gallery of Indonesia 2011 (Cipher Video #5).
In 2015, Syaiful “Paul” Anwar directed the documentary film “Harimau Minahasa (Tiger of Minahasa)” with the Interseksi Foundation. In 2012 he joined a residency program in Ansan, South Korea, in the “Earth Calling – Thinking Otherwise” program. In addition, he has also been on one of the Program Boards at Kineforum, Jakarta (2011-2012). He was also the director of Jakarta 32ºC, a college student biennale from 2012 to 2017 in ruangrupa, and Program Manager at Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem from 2016 to 2017.
